For all of you DEInsiders who are also regular readers of our Thursday feature, Insider Interact, you might recognize this name. She’s always sending in great questions; which is a good thing.
When it comes to what’s “cooking” with her about being a fan, we think she’s very qualified. And, if her favorite driver came to town, it appears he would see just that, too.
Looking at the picture, which was taken by our own Harold Hinson, she’s the one in the middle.
Name: Kathy Colmenares
From: Allentown, Pa.
Age: 49
Occupation: Cook in a Nursing Home
How long have you been following racing: I used to follow it years ago, but got back into it full time in 2000
How did you get started: I was visiting friends and they had the race on TV so I started watching and they told me that Dale Sr.'s - they are huge Dale Sr. fans - son was racing and was running good. It was the 2000 Texas race. I was hooked from then on.
Who was your first favorite driver, and why: Dale Jr. because he is so down to Earth and I admired the relationship he had with his Dad.
Who is your favorite now, and why: Still, and always will be, Dale Jr. Besides the fact that he's a great driver, Dale Jr. and I lost a parent about the same time and I guess I kind of bonded with him on a different level and understood what he was going through. And, may I say, he handled himself very well.
What is your favorite driver's best racing moment: That’s tough, there have been a lot. I would have to say the 2001 Dover win after 9/11. Dale Jr. was the prefect driver to win that race after the week this country had.
Best race you ever saw on TV or in person: I guess the 2006 Richmond race because I was there to see it in person. I was never so proud to be a Dale Jr. fan.
What is your favorite track for racing: I like Pocono because it's very fan friendly, but I think Richmond has the best races.
If your favorite driver came to your town, where would take him and what would you do: I don't think I would take him anywhere. I would give him a home cooked meal and just sit and get to know him more as a person and not just the racecar driver we all know. Maybe invite a few girls his age over to keep him company. (I think it's about time he finds a wife! LOL!)
If you worked at DEI, what would you like to do: I would love to do tours and chat with the fans. I love hearing and sharing stories.
If you ran NASCAR for a day, what rule would you change, add or delete: I would allow "only" three teams per company and make sure there weren’t any loopholes.
