Since NASCAR just announced the Busch Series would race in Canada next year, we thought it appropriate to select one of our neighbors to the North as our Fan of the Week.
It’s always interesting to see how people became interested in racing, and this is the first one we’ve heard like this FoW. Like most people, once he got interested – he got hooked.
Name: Troy Kilmister
From: Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
Age: 30
Occupation: Shipper/Receiver
How long have you been following racing: Since 1996
How did you get started: I worked at a GM dealership in the city where I live and every Monday morning the mechanics would be talking about the race from the weekend. It really piqued my interest to find out what NASCAR was all about. It’s now been 11 years that I’ve been watching it and I’ve been hooked ever since the first race I watched!!
Who was your first favorite driver, and why: My first favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr., because of working at a GM dealership. I was going with the sponsor. But then after a short time of watching and following the sport, I realized how much of a great person and driver he really was.
Who is your favorite now, and why: Definitely, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is now my favorite driver. I like the way he races and the way he is off the track in his interviews; he just seems like a down to earth guy.
What is your favorite driver’s best racing moment: Dale Jr. winning the
Daytona 500 in 2004!!
How many races do you attend a year: I attend two races a year; Michigan in June and Talladega in October.
Best race you ever saw on TV or in person: Best race I ever saw on TV, was by far, the Daytona 500 in 2004.
What is your favorite track for racing: I like a lot of them, but to pick one, I would have too say Talladega. Because of the high speeds they reach and too see the talent of the drivers when they race three and four wide is just great.
If your favorite driver came to your town, where would take him and what would you do: I would take Dale Jr. to the patio bar down by the marina, kick back, relax and drink some cold Bud's.
If you worked at DEI, what would you like to do: I would like to work for any pit crew at DEI.
If you ran NASCAR for a day, what rule would you change, add or delete: I would get rid of the impound rule. I think it would be fair for every driver to start on fresh tires. And also, if the driver or crew knew there was something wrong with the car, it would give them a chance to work on it before the race and not get penalized.
