When you’re wearing an Intimidator T-shirt and No. 3 hat in our Showroom, you’re bound to get noticed for Fan of the Week.
Such was the case for Ronald Jones as he was taking his family around for a tour. This retired police officer made the move from his northern home and is now a full-time Mooresville resident.
He yelled “Freeze!” and we did; that’s how he became this week’s featured fan.
Name: Ronald Jones
From: Dayton, Ohio – originally. Now I live in Mooresville.
Occupation: I’m a retired police officer from Kettering, Ohio where I served on the city force.
Age: 65
What brings you here: I’ve been retired for a few years and now we live in our RV here in Mooresville. I lived in Florida for awhile, but we’ve lived here for 1.5 years now.
How many times have you visited Dale Earnhardt, Inc.: This is my second time here and I love the place. It’s really hard to believe this is a race shop because it’s so nice. I love going into the Retail Store; I end up getting some kind of hat or shirt to take home even though it makes my wife mad. (Laughs) I also like the displays they have here of race cars and trophies. Those are things you really can’t see anywhere else.
When did you start following racing: I started about 20 years ago when I used to go to Dayton Speedway in Ohio. It was a half-mile asphalt track. It isn’t there anymore, but that’s where I first got interested.
What attracted you to the sport: I really like all the memorabilia that’s involved and drivers like Buddy Baker and Cale Yarborough used to come up to Dayton Speedway. From there, I just followed them.
Who were some of your favorites when you first started watching races: Cale Yarborough was because of the way he drove; he was always exciting on the track and was good with the fans.
When did you start following Dale: It had to be right from the beginning when a couple of friends of mine started following him. I just kept watching him from there and it’s been that way ever since because now I follow Dale Jr.
What drew you to become a fan of his: I just like the way he Dale drove. He drove like he had sense, but he had guts and was always a go-getter.
Favorite Dale Earnhardt moment: Oh, without a doubt when he won the Daytona 500 in 1998.
If you could work here, what would you like to do: I’d work in the Retail Store because I just love that stuff. I’d be buying things all the time. (Laughs) I just have things like hats and shirts, no die-casts or anything like that.
You said you now follow Dale Jr, what do you like about him: I just like the personality. He seems happy-go-lucky and I like all the commercials with him and Michael Waltrip.
What’s your favorite commercial: They’re all my favorites, it would be tough to pick just one.
How many races do you get to a year: I’ve never been to a live race, but I have some friends helping me get tickets to this year’s race here in October. We just watch all of them on TV; my wife is a big fan, too.
If you could run NASCAR for a day, what rule would you change, add or delete: I don’t know if I would change any of them right now. I like the new Chase for the Championship and how exciting it’s made these last 10 races. It’s so competitive and I just want to see some good, clean racing with teammates not taking out the other guys. I really do like the new format.
