This week’s fan tried to tell us his name was Big Country. After asking him the third time, he finally came clean with his real name amidst the laughter.
Spotted by the No. 8 pit stall wearing his Earnhardt jacket and Budweiser hat, he was a big target and easy to spot. Making it even more special for him was the fact it was his first race in person.
Name: Michael Haire
From: Fuquay Varina, NC
Age: 23
Occupation: I work for UPS as a part-time supervisor.
How long have you been following racing: It started 10 years ago when I saw a race and just began to follow Dale Earnhardt.
How did Dale have an effect on you to start watching more: He was the Intimidator, that’s for sure. I just really liked his racing style. He was ready to go and went after the win in every race. He just got me hooked.
How many races do you attend a year: Actually, this is my first race. And here I am in the pits, this is cool.
Name your favorite Dale Earnhardt moment: It had to be his Daytona 500 win in 1998. He really deserved to get that win. He was so close, so many times, and it seemed like the track owed him one.
When you don’t attend a race, how do you watch them: I grab me a cold one and watch them at home.
We see you’re a Dale Jr. fan, as well. What do you like about him: He seems to have a lot of his dad in him when it comes to driving. I just like him and like watching him race.
Name your favorite Dale Jr. moment: I’ll give you two. The Daytona win in July of 2001 and his Daytona 500 win are the best moments.
If you could work at DEI, what would you like to do: I’d want to be an engineer of some type.
Do you think Dale Jr. will ever get married: I don’t know, (Laughs) I can’t tell him what to do. He’ll be all right in that category, though, I’m sure.
