Wandering around at Daytona during testing, we found our Fan of the Week simply by his clothing.
Wearing a Michael Waltrip hat and T-shirt, he was taking in the new garage area. Since they were only doing single-car qualifying runs, we took a few minutes of his time to talk with him.
Name: Brian McCoy
From: Winter Haven, Fla.
Age: 28
Occupation: I own a video store called The Video Store
How long have you been following racing: I’ve been following it for about 20 years now.
How did you get interested: My dad started coming over to Daytona in 1980 and then he started bringing me when I was about six-years old. We’ve been coming here ever since. I haven’t missed a Daytona 500 since 1983.
Who was the first driver you started to follow: I started to follow Dale Earnhardt right from the start. My dad liked him and I just kind of followed along.
When did you become a fan of Michael Waltrip: In 1990, I started to watch Michael and follow his career. I was so happy when he came to DEI because I knew it would be a good place for him.
What is it about Michael that you like: I remember when he was driving for Pennzoil (yellow No. 30 car) back then and I just started to follow him. He’s a fun guy and he used to joke around back then, too.
Your favorite Michael moment: When he won the Daytona 500 in 2001 because it was his first win after so many years.
Name your favorite DEI commercial: That’s a tough one, I guess the one where Dale Jr. and the crew are laughing at him when he’s walking with Teresa is my favorite. Any of the ones he did with Dale Jr last year were pretty good, too.
If you could hang out with Michael in Winter Haven for a day, what would you do: I don’t know, he’s a fun guy. We live on a lake, so we’d take him out there and have fun just hanging out.
Say you got a job at DEI, what would you like to with us: I’d like to do something where I could go to the races – whatever that would be, I’d do it.
What is your favorite part about our website: I’m not a DEInsider, but I like to read about all the news and see the photo galleries. It’s a really good site.
Now that you’ve been picked as our Fan of the Week, you’re going to check out more, right? Oh heck yeah. (Laughs)
