MOORESVILLE, N.C. – (August 11, 2009) – The next generation of Earnhardt racers has made his debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Jeffrey Earnhardt, the son of Kerry Earnhardt and grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt earned his first Nationwide start on Sunday in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen for Key Motorsports.
Earnhardt finished 24th in the No. 40 FABgrills.com Chevrolet on the lead lap.
"I'm so proud of the team, they did a great job and got the car running pretty good," Earnhardt said.
Earnhardt started in the 36th position but was able to advance his position several times. By lap 17, he worked his way up to the 23rd spot. He fought his way to the front of the field by lap 21 and made it to 10th place. Earnhardt then drove up fourth position and raced with the event leaders.
However, after a pit stop on lap 35, he was sent back to the 26th position and had to again fight his way through the field.
During the final lap of the race, Earnhardt was running 20th when he was spun by the No. 34 of Matt Carter which put him back to 24th for the finish.
"It was the last lap and everyone was going for whatever spot they could get. At least we brought the car home in one piece. I hate that we couldn't have gotten the 19th place finish but I guess 24th isn't bad," said Earnhardt.
Earnhardt helped keep the Key Motorsports' No. 40 Chevrolet in the 23rd spot in NASCAR Nationwide Series points. It is now 273 points ahead of 30th place.
Of his qualifying run for the Zippo 200, Earnhardt was positive about the improvements the team made on the car.
"We had a pretty decent qualifying run. The team worked hard on the car, got it a lot better than where we ended up in practice, and I think everyone seemed pretty happy with it," Earnhardt said.
Earnhardt is looking forward to his next start in the Nationwide Series which will be on August 30, 2009, at the NAPA Auto Parts 200 presented by Dodge at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
"We'll take that car to the next race and do even better," Earnhardt said.
